US: Police report explosion below Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan
The New York police department reported one male suspect had been injured and taken into custody following an explosion in an underpass below Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. The suspect had a pipe bomb strapped to him when it prematurely exploded. The explosion reportedly took place in a passageway at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue at 0730 hrs local time.
Police have advised the public to avoid the streets around 42nd Street and 8th Avenue as several have been shut off. In addition, the A, C and E subway lines have been evacuated. While the motivation behind the explosion has not been confirmed, the use of a pipe bomb suggests terrorist intent.
