Antivirus software is designed to seek out, detect and eliminate harmful viruses and malware. Without it, a device connected to the internet would be infected very quickly.

Malicious software such as Trojans, adware, spyware and many more could easily infect an internet enabled device if it has no antivirus installed. With the advancement in technology there is a whole host of devices that are connected to the internet and in the future that number is set to increase dramatically.

Smartphones, tablets and computers will soon be joined by cars and household appliances as the internet of things expands. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Internet of things spending is set to reach $698.6 billion by the end of 2015. In 2019 that figure is set to rise to $1.3 trillion. 

Anti-virus software is vital to protecting a device online as they are constantly bombarded by attempts by malicious software to infect them. Anti-virus companies have to update their detection tools constantly to deal with the more than 60,000 new pieces of malware that are created on a daily basis.
